We need to protect 30% of the ocean by 2030.
We need to protect 30% of the ocean by 2030. Whether you live near the ocean or thousands of miles away, we all depend on it. The ocean provides us with life, food and livelihoods.
It gives us more than half the oxygen we breathe and creates livelihoods for more than three billion people around the world. Without a healthy ocean, there is no healthy planet or people.
3 billion people rely on the ocean for food and livelihoods.
Our ocean economy has been under tremendous stress from overexploitation, mismanagement, and neglect for a long time, and now many ecosystems may be on the brink of collapse.
Our ocean environment is in decline but only 2.4% of the ocean is currently fully protected.
of the ocean is currently fully protected.
of the ocean is what we need to protect.
Ocean ecosystems are on the brink of collapse.
Ocean ecosystems are able to heal, if we can give them a break.
Experts agree that 30% of the ocean must be strongly protected in Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) to maximize fisheries yield and safeguard marine resources.
2030 is the target year given by the United Nations by which we must protect 30% of the world’s ocean space to give our environment a chance to rebuild and thrive.
A recent study shows that carefully planned MPAs could yield triple benefits for the planet: increased biodiversity, more seafood and a reduction in atmospheric carbon. Research consistently shows that closing off areas of the ocean can actually benefit overfished reefs.
MARINE PROTECTED AREAS
Places in the ocean where human activities are limited to protect ocean ecosystems and wildlife.
Fully protected MPAs mean that no extractive activities are allowed. This means no fishing, mining, etc.
Protecting 30% of our ocean in MPAs will allow the ocean to rebound and regenerate.
"MPAs where no-take rules are followed can compensate for lost fishing grounds and stocks and therefore help people highly dependent on fish for income and nutritional security."
Our coalition was founded around one unifying belief: we can protect the environment and the economy at the same time. The environment is the economy, it’s the basis for all life and everything we do.
That's why we have put together a global network of ocean experts to help governments protect 30% of the ocean by 2030 to ensure Blue Prosperity for future generations.
Economic growth and prosperity balanced with environmental and ecosystem protection.
Through sustainable use of ocean and coastal resources, governments and communities can achieve a diverse, prosperous economy for future generations.
Bigger, more abundant fish
Improved fishing and livelihoods
Healthier marine environments
Improved ecosystem resilience
More opportunities for future generations
"A substantial increase in ocean protection could have triple benefits, by protecting biodiversity, boosting the yield of fisheries and securing marine carbon stocks that are at risk from human activities."
Blue Prosperity partners engage in a multi-year partnership with governments to develop and implement marine protection and establish a Blue Prosperity Plan.
We facilitate processes for blue economy development, marine spatial planning, sustainable fisheries tools, and marine protection to help ocean states achieve Blue Prosperity. The Coalition consists of a vast network of policymakers, scientists, economists, communicators, fisheries experts, and more to provide a holistic, well-rounded and customized approach for each initiative.
