VISION
Empowering Communities to Protect Their Ocean
MISSION
Our goal is to benefit coastal communities while restoring fish populations and habitats. The Waitt Institute endeavors to ensure ecologically, economically, and culturally sustainable use of ocean resources. The Institute partners with governments committed to developing and implementing comprehensive, science-based, community-driven solutions for sustainable ocean management.

APPROACH

Our approach is to engage stakeholders, provide the tools needed to design locally appropriate policies, facilitate the policymaking process, and build capacity for effective implementation and long-term success.

SCIENCE-BASED
Everything we do is grounded in science, starting with scientific assessments of the marine habitats and fisheries, continuing with policy recommendations, and ongoing monitoring.

COMMUNITY-DRIVEN
We listen hard to community priorities and concerns, through consultation meetings and stakeholder interviews. This input informs development and implementation of ocean policies.

BALANCED
The Blue Halo Initiative is not just about conservation, it’s about sustainable use that benefits coastal livelihoods and maintains coastal cultures.

COLLABORATIVE
We partner directly with island Governments and collaborate with community groups, stakeholders, businesses, scientists, and non-profit organizations.
